HUD is an acronym that stands for the Department of Housing and Urban Development. HUD is the broader federal government agency under which the FHA falls. HUD operates in all 50 states, as well as US territories, and is involved in everything from public housing to home loan funding. It was founded in 1965, but precursor organizations date back to the 1930s, when the National Housing Act and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) were instituted.
